I believe that visions are more important than goals. Goals entail some sort of materialistic view on what you would like to achieve whereas a vision is the perspective of what you think it will be like when you achieve multiple goals. In essence one is what is accomplishable with step by step tried and tested format where a vision is your interpretation of what the outcome will be like, it is giving the dream a life. When you feel something, it is easier to achieve because you have more of a buy in to the outcome whereas a goal is something that is a term that modern society has put forward that you must have in order to be successful.
If you can discover the “why” for what you want, then the level of motivation you put forward into accomplishing the vision is more relevant. If you look at your inspiration as a goal, then it becomes an expectation therefore it loses the passion behind the achievement. Your why is the glue that will keep you connected to your vision or passion. The why will give you the drive and motivation to get you to the finish line or starting point however you choose to look at it. If you don’t have a clear definitive why then your vision will crumble as you will lack the gumption to keep going when times get tough and hard decisions need to be made.
Sometimes you just must ask yourself if there was nothing holding you back, what would your life look like? Where would you be? What would a day in the life of “You” be like? Now take that vision and turn it into reality…. If you’re anything like me if I have a goal and I am close to achieving it, then I just change the goal posts so that I can always move forward. If I live in the vision of what my dream life looks like, then I never have to change the goal posts because a vision is fluid whereas a goal is more structured. For the people who adore structure and measurable outcomes then a goal is in alignment with that way of thinking. A visionary person will know what they need to feel successful without having to affix a goal type of scenario to the outlook.
As you can tell I’ve never liked the question “what are you goals?”. It should be more, “where do you see yourself five years from now?”. Then the obvious next question is how and what can you do to get to your future self? There must be some sort of movement forward in order to get to your vision, and your why will have to be stronger than you want to make money. Anyone has the ability to make money, however making money doing something you love is a vision and the goals are the steps you take to get there that in your mind are measurable outcomes.
